Like one of the commentators said, "spiral, the universal shape". I was surprised to see this in your gallery as I have a very similar one in my own. Yours is much more elaborate as a work, but it stands alone, mine is little elaborate (quick work in college) but has more elements.

it reminds me of either a nautilus or snail shell, with the strange thread-like stripes being the cause of some unknown force of erosion.

Reminds me of the 'hell I go through creating fractals at times.'
Excellent image though!.
I will have to re mind myself when I am having trouble with a fractal. To come a check that pic out, then get back to work lol.:)
