Wow, I really got the chance to paint another coverart for one of my favourite Metal bands, Manilla Road!
I bought my first record of them in 1994 ("The Deluge" - still my favourite) and it blew me away with its raw epic and theatrical style!
This is the artwork for their upcoming album "Playground Of The Damned" with a darker approach fitting to the lyrics.
It seems not to be a typical Manilla Road Cover at first sight, hence I put in some elements of older Covers of the band, especially from the great "Open The Gates" artwork done by Eric Larnoye (R.I.P.) in the 80s.
Mark Shelton (guitars and vocals) just told me that it had to be dark and showed my a few images of Beksinski (R.I.P.) to get a feeling of the direction he was thinking of (he also wanted me to paint some elements of previous Manilla Road album covers into it, but I would have done that anyway, hehe).
It's painted digitally in Corel Painter but the background is based on an abstract acrylic painting of mine and I also layered some textures of other acrylic paintings over the digitally painted areas to let it look less polished.
Most of it done in several hours (maybe far more than 40) in Painter with a wacom tablet and also a little bit of Photoshop work.
